robots in the desert

I just finished watching the PBS Nova show, The Great Robot Race. I enjoyed this show alot. They did a great job detailing the differing approaches to the race, and the background of the participants.
I haven't made any real progress debugging the wifi problem. On top of that, I the rpm database has corrupted itself twice today for no apparent reason. I'm starting to get a very bad feeling about this entire upgrade.
If there's any good news, its that I got TV-out with an S-Video cable working on this same laptop today. I tried to get it working about a year ago, and had no luck. But at the time, I hadn't much of a clue of how to configure X properly for TV-out with the i830 gpu and i810 X driver. Basically, the important missing piece of the puzzle was the "MonitorLayout" option.
In other news, I'm going to try to use LIRC and the infrared receiver from my Pinnacle TV encoder card to setup a remote control for mplayer/xine. At this point, I've only done some very limited research
