bee sting

I watched Bee Season tonight. I was expecting a movie about preparing for a spelling bee, but instead got this overly complex film about a really disfunctional family, which happened to have one member partaking in spelling bees. This family was really messed up. Actually, the parents were messed up, and the kids were just lost. The son is spiritually confused, and as son as some cult girl's dog runs up to him in a park, he's joining the hari krishna cult. Richard Gear's character was just this self-serving sycophant, using his daughter to help him on this wacknut quest to talk to god. The daughter just wants to please everyone around them, and seems incredibly depressed throughout. And what was the deal with Juliet Binoche? I've never been terribly impressed with acting, but jebus, she's was incredibly wooden in this film. They could have at least made her an interesting nutjob, but instead she's a boring compulsive nutjob. Overall, I just didn't understand what the deal was with all this warped behavior. None of it fit together into anything meaningful, and the ending was just stupid.
