seeing it from the other side

I'm tasked (well, I volunteered) with training a new hire. I'm trying to teach him Linux from scratch, and he knows absolutely nothing. Its somewhat eye opening seeing what its like for an absolute newbie to try to learn Linux. I showed him how to setup a serial console, and that about blew his mind. His eyes lit up when he saw the bootup spew fly by on the serial console. At one point, his system failed to start X at bootup for some reason (I didn't bother to investigate, because I was somewhat pleased that he'd have to actually learn something, rather than just pointing & clicking his way through everything), and at first he was really puzzled as to what was going on, and asked me where the OS went.
