Pacific NW: day 1

We started our trip to the Pacific Northwest bright & early. We were out the door before 6AM for the drive up to Salem, Oregon. The drive was, for the most part, uneventful, although there was significant smoke in the air once we got north of Red Bluff, CA due to all the wild fires in the mountains just to the west. We arrived in Salem just before 3PM, with the temperature outside hovering around 104F. This was apparently the hottest day of the year, and it was humid too.
