horsemen

Tonight, I watched Horsemen. It was basically a story of a cop hunting a very violent serial killer. I thought that the first half was really engrossing. It had this Se7en feel to it, with these horrific, creative murders all backed by a biblical theme. But just past the half way mark, it lost its direction and focus, and got weird in a bad way. Its as if they never really thought through how to sustain the tension into a shocking ending (as Se7en did so effectively). Anyway, it wasn't bad, but it had the potential to be so much better.
Afterwards, I saw 500 Days of Summer, the hokey, quasi-indie 'not a love story' film. It was cute and sweet, and annoying all at once. Joseph Gorden Levitt was his usual awesome self. The narration was completely unnecessary and really served no purpose. Zooey Deschanel was the same character that she's played in every movie she's ever done. I'm pretty well convinced that she can't act, and she's just playing herself while wearing retro-trendy clothes and batting her eyes. It was fun, the soundtrack was quirky.
